Air Fryer Baked Sweet Potatoes

Air Fryer Baked Sweet Potatoes combine the delicious flavors of brown sugar, cinnamon, and marshmallows with a perfectly cooked and tender sweet potato – no oven needed!

A 30-MINUTE SIDE DISH RECIPE

Any time I’m looking for a shortcut in the kitchen, I can usually count on my Air Fryer to help me find a way! The main reason I love the air fryer for baked potatoes or baked sweet potatoes is it cooks faster than in the oven (by at least 30 minutes!) and that is a huge time saver when you need to get dinner on the table quickly. With this super simple Air Fryer Baked Sweet Potatoes recipe, you can enjoy a tender, perfectly cooked sweet potato. Make it for one or make it for a family, it all works with this recipe!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What kind of Air Fryer works best?

Just like with my many other Air Fryer recipes, there are a few things to consider when choosing and working with your Air Fryer. I test all of my air fryer recipes using a 6-quart basket style fryer. If you have a larger Air Fryer, you can make more sweet potatoes at once. The same goes for a smaller Air Fryer. It just so happens that my Air Fryer could fit 3 medium sized sweet potatoes. Some sweet potatoes can get HUGE though so it’s really a matter of what will fit in your specific Air Fryer. Keep that in mind when choosing them at the store. That is why there is a large cooking time range on this recipe. It may need to be adjusted if you are using more sweet potatoes or if you are using potatoes that are particularly large. Also, if you’re using a style of Air Fryer that isn’t a basket, like a tray or something else, you may need to adjust the cooking time of the recipe too.

It’s impossible for me to own every single type of air fryer out there and to test it in all of them so I pick the one air fryer that the majority of Americans own and that is the basket style. If you have a different kind, you will have to test it out yourself and play it by ear – I can only tell you how it cooks in this particular type of air fryer.

Do I need to preheat the Air Fryer first?

Nope! Pop the potatoes in the basket and get started.

Can I air fry regular potatoes instead?

Sure, if you’d like to use regular potatoes, try my Air Fryer Baked Potatoes recipe instead.

Can I use the Air Fryer inserts?

I personally don’t like the air fryer paper inserts unless they have holes in them. I know it makes for easier cleanup but it can keep the air from circulating around the food properly and can result sometimes in uneven cooking (or it takes longer to cook). It’s an air fryer for a reason, right? Let it do it’s job properly.

How do I know when my sweet potatoes are done cooking?

The cooking time required can vary widely as you’ll see in this recipe. The size of your potatoes will change this up quite a bit too. I would start with the 25 minutes, check to see if they are one and go from there. It’s really easy to know when a sweet potato is done, if you can stick a fork or knife into it easily, it’s ready.

I don’t have an air fryer, how do I make these in the oven?

I have a recipe for oven baked sweet potatoes. Just click on that blue link and it will take you to the recipe.

How do I store leftover baked sweet potatoes?

You can keep the potatoes in the fridge for up to 3 days. The optional topping may change consistency over time.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE)

  • sweet potatoes
  • olive oil– I prefer olive oil or even avocado oil to use in the air fryer. I find they keep the basket from getting gunky and sticky over time. But if you prefer something else, try using that.
  • unsalted butter– you can use salted and just skip the additional salt in the recipe)
  • brown sugar– if you don’t want any sweetness with your sweet potatoes, omit the brown sugar and ditch the optional sweet toppings.
  • ground cinnamon– I tried to be conservative on the amount of ground cinnamon I suggested, knowing that every person has different tastes, but I will say that personally, I’ll be adding some more than what I suggested. Ha, I enjoy a good amount of cinnamon, but know that not everyone likes what I personally prefer. So, start with less, like I suggested, and add more if you desire.
  • salt– optional
  • mini marshmallows– I use these for a sweet topping. They’re optional but really make a difference in my opinion. But, I know everyone likes their sweet potatoes a little differently, so add what you enjoy and leave out the rest.
  • chopped pecans– this is an optional topping.
