FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
The Ranch Water cocktail is believed to have originated in the West Texas town of Marfa. The name “Ranch Water” is thought to have come from the fact that it is a simple, refreshing drink, like water, that ranchers and cowboys would enjoy after a long day of work out in the hot sun. Sure, after that many hours in the sun, they probably needed just water instead of alcohol to rehydrate, but who am I to judge, right!?!
It’s a popular sparkling (carbonated) water brand. You can use any sparkling water brand for this.
If you can’t find agave syrup, just use some simple syrup instead. If you want to use simple syrup in place of the agave syrup, the color will be different. To make your own simple syrup, follow these steps.
You will need equal parts of water and sugar. Start by heating water in a saucepan over medium heat. Once the water is warm, gradually stir in an equal amount of sugar. Continue stirring until the sugar completely dissolves. Let the mixture simmer for a few minutes until it slightly thickens. Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the simple syrup to cool before using it in in this cocktail.
Make a large batch in advance by mixing together the tequila, lime juice, and syrup in a large container. Keep the mixture in the fridge until your guests arrive and then serve over ice and top with mineral water! Super simple and tasty cocktail for friends and family.
This cocktail is best when you make it, but similar to making it ahead of time, you can store it in the fridge if needed to enjoy drinking a short while later.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE)
- silver tequila – this is just a clear tequila that is bottled right after being distilled (which means it is not aged) but you can certainly use your favorite tequila.
- agave syrup – see my Frequently Asked Questions above about a substitute.
- lime juice– fresh squeezed is the only way to go here. The bottled stuff is too acidic and doesn’t provide the right flavor. I’m all about a good shortcut, but using the bottled lime juice is NOT it! Stick to the fresh squeezed stuff.
- Topo-Chico – this is just carbonated water so use whatever you enjoy. Topo Chico also makes a lime carbonated (sparkling) water that works nice with this drink.
- lime wedges– these are for garnishing the drink and to add a kick of lime flavor.

HOW TO MAKE RANCH WATER
Fill 2 large glasses with ice. Divide the tequila among the two glasses followed by the agave syrup and lime juice.

Give it a good stir so the syrup dissolves. Top with the topo-chico, gently stir again if desired.

Add lime wedges and serve.
