FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Do I have to use Nacho Cheese flavored Doritos?

No, you can use any of your favorite Doritos flavors. Cool Ranch is another one that we love.

How do I serve these?

These are great to set up as a taco bar where you have your bags of Doritos and all the toppings set out where people can make their own Walking Tacos. This is perfect for picky eaters!!

What can I top these Walking Tacos with?

You can top them with any of your favorite taco toppings. Some ideas include salsa, guacamole, olives, jalapeños, sour cream, pinto beans, refried beans, kidney beans – the list goes on!

How do I store Walking Tacos?

I do not recommend storing them after they have been assembled. They are best eaten fresh. You can store all the other ingredients to make these separately until you are ready to assemble.

Can I make the meat ahead of time?

Yes you can! We love using our Crock Pot Taco Meat for this recipe, where it can remain in the crock pot until ready to use and stays warm!

Is there a dessert version?

Absolutely! We absolutely love Walking Banana Pudding, Walking Strawberry Pretzel Salad and Walking Strawberry Cheesecakes. You should definitely check those out if you love this recipe!

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE)

  • Doritos – you can use any flavor of Doritos you love or you could use tortilla chips as well. Feel free to give your guests several to choose from.
  • seasoned taco meat – You can just prepare the meat just like you would with making tacos (using a packet of taco seasoning with water and cooked ground beef.) I prefer this with taco meat but a lot of people also like chili (which I think works best with Fritos) but this is a super simple recipe to tailor to your tastes! You can also make the taco meat using my Homemade Taco Seasoning and/or use my recipe for Crock Pot Taco Meat. This makes it easy for serving as well!
  • black beans – I know black beans are a love/hate so you can use these or not or maybe substitute with a bean you prefer like pintos or kidney beans.
  • colby jack cheese – I love the colors that come with the Colby Jack cheese but use what you prefer or set out a few different kinds.
  • your favorite taco toppings – generally I like to put out diced tomatoes, sliced olives, salsa, guacamole, sour cream and maybe a little cilantro.
Ingredients needed: Doritos, seasoned taco meat, black beans, Colby Jack cheese and your Favorite Taco Toppings

HOW TO MAKE WALKING TACOS:

Open or cut off the tops of the Doritos bags. Fold the sides down slightly. This makes the them a bit easier to eat with a fork. Note: I like to crush my Doritos a bit to make this more like a taco salad. I will crush them with my hands before I open the bag. Add the taco meat to each of the bags.

collage of two photos: Opened small bags of Doritos on a tray; taco ground beef added to each Doritos bag.

Next add the beans. Top beans with cheese. Lastly add your favorite taco toppings. Some options are: guacamole, sour cream, salsa, diced tomatoes, sliced black olives, fresh chopped cilantro, and lime wedges.

collage of three photos: black beans added as a layer to the Doritos bags, shredded cheese added on top of bean layer; sour cream and diced tomatoes added on top of cheese layer.

Optional: squeeze the lime over the top and mix everything together. Grab a fork and enjoy!

Notes

  • This is great to set up as a taco bar with bags and ingredients set out for people to build themselves.
  • I love using my Crock Pot Taco Meat for this recipe as you can keep it warm in the crock pot. Or you can buy a packet of taco seasoning and prepare meat according to the back of the package directions. Or make a Homemade Taco Seasoning. Chili can also be used but I think that works best with Fritos.
