Air Fryer Steak Fajitas
This recipe for Air Fryer Steak Fajitas features sliced New York Strip steak, peppers, onions, and seasonings all stuffed into tortillas and served with a quick homemade chipotle cream sauce!
A 20-MINUTE DINNER RECIPE
Every time I make a steak in the Air Fryer, I’m always tickled with how incredible it is! Always juicy, always flavorful, and insanely easy to do. I absolutely never thought a steak could come anywhere close to how good it can taste on the grill or in a skillet with butter but I am telling you – it works! My husband is a steak snob and even he praises how good they are and would never believe it came out of an air fryer. It’s become a go-to recipe for making the best fajitas during the week (and that chipotle cream sauce will knock your socks off!)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Chipotle sauce can usually be found in small cans in the same aisle as all the taco stuff and Mexican products. If you need help, La Costena (not a paid affiliate link) is a brand that I use regularly so you can keep an eye out for it on the shelves.
Cutting steak in slices against the grain keeps the steak pieces tender. So that’s what I always suggest doing for these fajitas.
I really enjoyed this strip steak, but I think a ribeye or sirloin would also work. New York Strip and ribeye will generally be more tender cuts, perfect for fajitas. Flank steak or flat iron steaks would work as well for a slightly more budget friendly option.
You can serve whatever you enjoy with your typical fajitas. Chips and Salsa, Guacamole, or Queso Dip are all great options. Any Mexican Rice, Refried Beans, pinto beans, etc would work nicely too.
Yep, you’d prepare it the same way and cook in the air fryer until chicken is fully cooked and reached an internal temperature of 165F degrees (about 10-15 minutes.)
Cooking temperatures (estimates only and can vary based on the type of air fryer used – always go by meat temperature for food safety and to get the correct temperature for the degree of doneness you prefer)
Medium-Rare: Cook for 5-6 minutes
Medium: Cook for 7-8 minutes.
Medium-Well: Cook for 9-10 minutes.
I created the chipotle cream sauce to be served with these but some additional toppings you can add: sliced avocado, fresh salsa, or shredded cheese to the fajitas. You can kick up the heat with jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce. I will usually just put a bunch of toppings in bowls and let everyone help themselves.
You can keep the leftovers in the fridge for up to 5 days.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE)
- New York strip steak– When slicing, I suggest going against the grain. I think a ribeye or sirloin would also work. New York Strip and ribeye will generally be more tender cuts. See my Frequently Asked Questions above for more ideas.
- green and red bell peppers– if you aren’t a fan of green bell peppers (some people tend to find them a stronger flavor than other colors) then use what you like.
- yellow onion
- lime– I always suggest using fresh lime juice over the bottled stuff for better flavor.
- packet fajita seasoning – you can grab whatever brand you enjoy or make your own Homemade Fajita Seasoning.
- flour tortilla shells – you could totally serve these on corn tortillas or lettuce wraps. Just remember, whether you are using flour or corn tortillas to warm them up before serving.
- cilantro – If you are part of the crowd of people who dislike cilantro or think it tastes like soap, you can absolutely omit it.
- cilantro lime rice– I use this for serving and it is also optional. A lot of different brands make cilantro lime rice: Mahatma, Uncle Ben’s, etc. You don’t have to use the Royal brand that I used in the ingredient photo below . Zatarain’s (not a paid affiliate) makes a really good one too. Or you can use a different rice altogether or skip the rice in general. I also think this 3-Ingredient Mexican Rice would be delicious with these fajitas.
- sour cream – this is going to be for the chipotle cream sauce. You could also use Mexican Crema as a substitute or just skip this cream sauce altogether.
- chipotle sauce– I shared where to find this in the FAQ section and if you don’t have it still, you could just use some taco sauce.
- smoked paprika – I prefer the smoked paprika for the flavor it brings to these fajitas, but regular paprika can be used.

HOW TO MAKE AIR FRYER STEAK FAJITAS

Cook immediately or can be marinated for up to 1 hour. Preheat the air fryer for 5 minutes to 400°F. While the air fryer is heating up, add the sauce ingredients to a bowl. Mix until combined. Place the sauce in the fridge.

Add the peppers and onions to the air fryer. Cook for 5 minutes. Shake the peppers and onions in the air fryer basket. Top the peppers with the steak. Cook the steak for 5 to 10 minutes depending on how you like your meat cooked.

Serve the fajitas on the tortilla shells. Top with the sauce and cilantro.
