Air Fryer Halloumi

Crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, this Air Fryer Halloumi is the perfect quick snack or appetizer. Enjoy golden, gooey cheese bites fast!

TENDER OOEY, GOOEY CHEESE RECIPE

Air Fryer Halloumi has become my new favorite snack, appetizer or snack-e-tizer – ha! I’m hooked on it now. If you like mozzarella sticks – you will LOVE this!! Perfect quick after school/after work snack too. If you aren’t familiar with halloumi cheese, it is very similar to bread cheese. It is a semi-hard white cheese (usually made from cow’s milk but I have seen goat’s milk versions.) You do not have to warm it up to enjoy it but it holds up really well to the heating process which makes it a great cheese to pop in the air fryer on in a skillet! It’s simple to make and comes together super fast!

It came out great! Was easy to make and tastes amazing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What if I can’t find Halloumi cheese?

So, I live in a smaller area and I can usually only find this kind of cheese at Aldi’s. But, I will say that I have noticed this cheese becoming more “mainstream” and some of the bigger chain grocery stores tend to have it. If you can’t find it, look for a harder cheese like “bread cheese” or “grilling cheese”. Trader Joe’s makes a delicious garlic bread cheese that is amazing! Just slice it up and continue with the recipe as written below!

Can I make this ahead of time?

Since it comes together so quickly, it’s smart to wait until you’re ready to serve it since it’s best served right away!

Can I make this on the stovetop in a skillet instead?

Yes, this can be done in a skillet and you may be familiar with making it that way. But, I find using the Air Fryer a lot easier.

Do I have to use parchment paper?

If you don’t have parchment paper you can use aluminum foil or just ditch it altogether and plop it right in the Air Fryer basket. The parchment paper was mainly used for easy clean up anyway.

How do I store leftovers?

I only make this cheese right before serving. The cheese can be stored for up to 5 days in the fridge. You can reheat it at 400° F in the oven, for 2-4 minutes.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE)

  • halloumi cheese– it is sold in blocks. Don’t hesitate to ask a store associate if you need help finding it. You should find it with the other cheeses but some stores carry it with the specialty cheeses in a separate case.
  • olive or avocado oil
  • paprika – this really is for color so if you don’t have it, don’t go out and buy it just for this.
  • garlic powder
  • honey– this is optional, but I think it adds a touch of sweetness
  • red pepper flakes– again, this is all optional. It adds a touch of heat but if you don’t like that, don’t use it.
  • sprigs of rosemary – optional but I think if you are serving this to guests, it really elevates it and makes a nice presentation.

HOW TO MAKE AIR FRYER HALLOUMI:

Line a 5-6 quart air fryer tray with parchment paper. Brush both sides of the cheese slices with olive oil. Evenly sprinkle the paprika and garlic powder on both sides of the cheese.

Halloumi cheese cut into sticks, cheese brushed with oil, and cheese coated with spices.

Place the cheese in the air fryer basket. Cook at 350F degrees for 4-5 minutes or until golden brown. You don’t need to preheat the air fryer first. Flip the cheese over (it is pretty hot at this point so do this with tongs or a spatula) and cook for an additional 4 to 5 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

Seasoned Halloumi cheese on parchment paper, in an Air Fryer basket and cooked halloumi cheese.

Optional: top with red pepper flakes, rosemary and a drizzle of honey.
