FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
If you don’t have Lime Jell-O powder, you could just add some greed food coloring instead. I’d add a few drops at a time until you reach the desired color you’re looking for.
Yes, you can make this in the slow cooker. This recipe only makes enough for two to three people so if you need to serve more, I’d suggest using my Crock Pot Hot Chocolate Recipe and then finish “assembling” to look like a witches brew in a cauldron mug.
If you do not have dark cocoa powder or don’t care for it, regular cocoa powder will work too and taste just as yummy. The dark cocoa powder just gives it an extra touch of richness.
Cool Whip whipped topping can be substituted for the homemade whipped cream. It doesn’t need to be piped onto the hot chocolate if you don’t want to. You can just dollop it on. You can put a couple drops of food coloring into the cool whip.
You can grab your own cauldron mug from Amazon (paid link) if desired.
This recipe makes enough for two (maybe three) cups of cocoa, but I know this would be really cute to be served at a kids Halloween party too, so feel free to double it or triple it to make as much as you need!
This drink is best when you first make it. I’d hesitate to store leftovers for long, but you could store a drink without the topping in the fridge for a few hours and then reheat as necessary.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE)
- whole milk – I use a combination of whole milk and heavy cream here to make it rich but not too thick to be enjoyable. Fat equals flavor. You can certainly use a lower fat milk (not skim – it’s far too liquidy) but highly suggest going with full fat.
- heavy cream
- dark cocoa powder– you could use regular cocoa powder too. I used Hershey’s brand, but other brands would work too.
- granulated sugar
- dark chocolate melting wafers – The dark chocolate wafers can be found in most grocery stores and craft stores like Michaels. You can use milk chocolate if you don’t like dark chocolate. Ghiradelli (paid link) makes some wafers, but other brands do as well.
- powdered sugar
- lime Jell-O powder– check out the Frequently Asked Questions section above if you don’t happen to have any Jell-O on hand or don’t want to use Jell-O.
- green sphere sprinkles– these are optional, but they do make a really cute accent to this fun drink. You can grab your sprinkles from Amazon (paid link) if needed.

HOW TO MAKE WITCHES BREW HOT CHOCOLATE:
In a small saucepan, combine heavy cream, milk, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Heat on medium until warmed through, stirring with a whisk to break up the cocoa powder clumps. Once combined, add in dark cocoa melting wafers and stir until they have fully melted into the cocoa.

In a chilled bowl, beat heavy cream, powdered sugar, and Jell-o powder on high with a hand mixer until stiff peaks form. Once stiff peaks have formed, spoon whipped cream into a piping bag with a star tip. 3. Pipe (or dollop) the whipped cream into the top of your hot cocoa in the mug.

Top with green sphere sprinkles and now you have delicious, dark Witch’s Brew Hot Cocoa!
